Why Hasidism? A Four Session Class Taught by Rabbi Emeritus Michael Strassfeld

November 26, 2024 @ 7:00 pm EST

In the last few decades, Hasidic teachings have become increasingly popular in the liberal Jewish community. While the rationalism of Mordecai Kaplan with his notion of a non-supernatural God seems to be the direct opposite of Hasidism’s mysticism and belief in God, there are two areas of remarkable agreement. Kaplan’s definition of Judaism as an evolving religious civilization is echoed in Hasidic texts that describe a dynamic notion of Torah and a belief that all things, even the secular, can be holy. The class will focus on these and other core teachings of the Hasidic masters. No background is necessary.
