Surprising Moral and Philosophical Implications of Maimonides Tshuva Teachings, presented by Dan Woods (Multi-access Tish)

Most discussions of the chapter on Tshuva in the Mishneh Torah focus on Maimonides recommendations for personal growth, which are codified in steps for: Acknowledging Harm, Personal Transformation, Restitution, Apology. But much of the chapter deals with actions and beliefs that are dogmatically unforgivable and how judgements about entering the world to come will be made.

In this Tish, Dan Woods will explain why these religious principles have surprising relevance to the modern day. Consider this sin, if repeated, that counts heavily against one from entering the world to come: “one who invents a [disparaging] nickname for a colleague; one who calls a colleague by a [disparaging] nickname;”

Other principles for judging the merit of individuals to enter the world to come are utilitarian and suggest a stark contrast between Christian and Jewish concepts of sin and redemption.
