Shavuot as Reconstructed by Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, presented by Diane Cole

Reconstructionist Judaism’s founder Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan highlighted Shavuot as the holiday that reminds us of “God As the Power That Makes for Righteousness.” Its essential message focuses on the Torah as “moral law,” and a basis for ethical and humanitarian behavior. Can a holiday’s theme be more relevant than that in our world today? I’ll also bring to the discussion the ideas of Rabbi Neil Gillman, who studied with Kaplan, and whose book “Sacred Fragments”. Recovering Theology for the Modern Jew,” presents a brilliant recapitulation of Kaplan’s ideas.
