SOJAC Tish: Fighting for the Rights of Immigrant Children: Relating the Flores Case to Torah, presented by Daniele Gerard.

The Torah calls us to protect the vulnerable, usually represented by a reference to the widow and the orphan. In current times, such protection often is a result of civil rights class action lawsuits. In this Tish, Daniele Gerard, SAJ member and senior staff attorney at Children’s Rights, will explain aspects of the Flores case, a long running class action settlement entered to protect immigrant children in federal custody. Despite being attacked by every administration since 1997, the settlement still requires the federal government to provide for the basic needs and safety of immigrant children.  Daniele will review the relationship between the case and Torah.
