“Yiddish Culture is for Everyone (including you)!”, presented by Jacob Giner.

Yiddish was the mame-loshn (mother tongue) of the great majority of the world’s Jews for nearly 1000 years. Tens of thousands of books on every topic imaginable, from religion to chemistry to communism, as well as some of the greatest novels and poetry ever written, were composed in this language. And, contrary to popular belief, Yiddish is alive and kicking. Its speakers and activists live all over the world, in locales as distant as Argentina, Israel, and Lithuania. Come learn how the language of Ashkenazi civilization developed, blossomed, and continues to thrive with Jacob Giner, SAJ staff and professional Yiddishist. We will discuss the wide-ranging appeal of Yiddish, which has attracted a new generation of learners in the previous two decades. We will learn why Jews of all political and cultural persuasions, and no small amount of non-Jews, have taken to learning this vibrant language, and how you can make a personal connection with it, whether you called your grandmother Bubbie, Savta, or Nonna. Yiddish culture is for everyone — including you!

Jacob Giner is a staff member at SAJ and the 2024 Yiddish Cultural Activism Fellow at The Workers Circle. They also write journalism in Yiddish for the Jewish Daily Forward. Jacob is a graduate of Columbia University’s MA in Jewish Studies and Tel Aviv University’s Yona Goldrich Advanced Seminar in Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture.
