Speaking a Shared Future: The Impact of Language Learning in a Divided Jerusalem
Co-Sponsored with West End Synagogue
Middle Eastern Dinner ($18 per person) at 6:15 PM
Presentation & Discussion with Lissan at 7:00 PM
In a time of division, upheaval, and uncertainty in both the U.S. and Israel, join us for a conversation with Lissan, an organization working to advance gender and social equality in Jerusalem by fostering a vision of a bilingual Hebrew-Arabic city. Hear from Lissan’s Community and Finance Director Sireen Smoom and Director of Partnerships and Strategic Development Aliza Schoffman Land about how language learning transforms lives, strengthens communities, and shapes Israeli-Palestinian relationships.
Lissan– ליסאן- ن (Arabic for “language” or “tongue”) is a grassroots non-profit organization advancing gender and social equality in Jerusalem. Lissan strives to bridge the gap between East and West Jerusalem by promoting linguistic justice and fostering a vision of a bilingual Hebrew-Arabic city. Lissan provides practical Hebrew language classes tailored to the needs of East Jerusalemite Palestinian women. These courses equip participants with the skills to navigate Jerusalem’s public sphere independently, access essential rights and resources, and pursue personal and professional growth. Their multicultural team of Jewish Israeli and Palestinian staff and volunteers works together to create a more just and equitable Jerusalem.
Sireen Smoom, a native of East Jerusalem, currently serves as Lissan’s Community and Finance Director. Driven by her deep-seated commitment to social and gender justice, Sireen found her calling at Lissan, where she channels her passion into creating better opportunities for women in her community.
Aliza Schoffman Land, originally from the Washington, DC area, currently serves as the Director of Partnerships and Strategic Development at Lissan. Driven by her commitment to social impact and peacebuilding, Aliza found her calling at Lissan, where she channels her passion into promoting linguistic and social equity through language education.
