The Feldenkrais Method: a Mindful Movement Practice with Deep Jewish Roots, presented by Jonah Scott Mendelsohn

The Feldenkrais method is a 60-year-old form of neuromuscular reeducation through gentle movement that bridges such fields as physical therapy and mindfulness meditation. The method is for anyone seeking more comfortable, efficient, sustainable movement and greater self-awareness for purposes of pain reduction, performance enhancement (day-to-day/athletic/artistic), and self-discovery.

Moshe Feldenkrais’s method reconstructs the Chasidic teaching of his Ukrainian childhood through secular lenses, including: his experience at the age of 14 as a refugee, making Aliyah to Palestine in 1918; and his work as an engineer and self-defense expert during World War II. Feldenkrais’ students included such diverse Jewish leaders as Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, the Rebbe Menachem Schneerson, and Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, a founder of the Jewish Renewal movement.

Member Jonah Mendelsohn is training for certification as a Feldenkrais practitioner. The presentation will include a 15-minute chair lesson. Following the Tish, he will offer free classes to the SAJ community as part of his student teaching requirements – to sign up and share about your movement interests, please use this Google Form:
