The Life and Legacy of Henrietta Szold (1860-1945) presented by Diane Cole (Multi-access Tish)

May 18 @ 9:00 am - 9:50 am EDT

Henrietta Szold portrait

The Life and Legacy of Henrietta Szold (1860-1945) presented by Diane Cole.

Henrietta Szold is best known for founding Hadassah in 1912 and devoting the rest of her life to building the health and social welfare infrastructure of a land that she hoped Jews and Arabs alike could call home. But that is only the second half of her life. Her full life story tracks the history of Jews in America (she was born in Baltimore, my home town!), the story of Jewish feminism, and not least the evolution of different threads of Zionism. As someone who did not begin organizing Hadassah until she was almost 50, she is also an important example of self-reinvention in the second half of life.

This Tish is dedicated to long-time SAJ member and friend, Shel Schiffman, who once suggested I devote a Tish to Szold. Thank you, Shel!

Multi-access Tishes are held at 9:00 a.m. ET on Shabbat in the SAJ Social Hall in person and also can be attended using the Zoom room listed below.

SAJ members often arrive 10 minutes early at the Social Hall and on Zoom to enjoy schmoozing.
