In Real Life: The Homeless Hero & The Crisis of Homelessness in NYC
Docu
mentary Screening and Conversation with Shams DaBaron, aka Da Homeless Hero
Join us as we dig into the homelessness crisis of the nation’s largest city. We will be screening Sam Eaton (of Newsy)’s short film about this topic, which includes valuable perspectives from Shams DaBaron and others experiencing homelessness, advocates, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. After the screening, we will have a Question and Answer Conversation with Shams DaBaron himself, a directly impacted individual and tireless advocate and activist who emerged into the spotlight when members of the Upper West Side community attempted to remove unhoused men, who were placed at the  Lucerne hotel during the pandemic, from the neighborhood.

Shams DaBaron is a writer, filmmaker, and hip-hop pioneer who first experienced homelessness as a child, after being discharged from the foster care system at age 12. He has emerged as an advocate for himself, his fellow residents, and the community alike, working to increase community engagement, expand supportive services, and change the status quo as it pertains to homelessness in NYC.
