Mordecai Kaplan: The Community, the Individual and the Universal with Dr. Mel Scult.

A Tish in honor of the Celebration of the Accomplishments of SAJ’s 100 Years and our next 100. Mordecai Kaplan taught the fundamental importance of belonging to the Jewish people. In his thinking and writing, we also find a very strong sense of the universal, of the larger whole, of the community of all peoples. There is even a connection to the “ beloved community “ of Martin Luther King. At the same time, Kaplan emphasized the sacredness of the individual which is essential to our faith in democracy. To become uniquely who we are is at the center of our religious quest. We will look at these themes and tensions in the Tish.
