Multi-Access Tish: Holocaust Remembrance Day presented by Phyllis Palm who will explain the story of Rawa Ruska

May 7, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 9:45 am EDT

When Patrick Desbois went to Rawa Ruska, a small village in Ukraine, he was looking to see why his French grandfather who was detained there during WWII was so hesitant about telling him as a seven year old boy what he had experienced. All he had said was “It was worse for the others.”

He found that the detainees were used as slave labor in the killing of the Jews. Father Desbois was so upset about his discovery that he set out to find out more of what happened. More than Babyn Yar, the massacre of 33,700 Jews on Rosh Hashonah in 1941, he discovered thousands of killing sites as well as spent cartridges, corroborating the fact that mass killings had taken place. One bullet one murder. He interviewed survivors who had witnessed the killings. What he and his team found has been described in his book, In Broad Daylight and has been documented as the Holocaust by Bullets.

An NGO was established to fund his project and now a pictorial exhibit is travelling across the country to educate us about this part of the Holocaust that had not been known before the breakup of the Soviet Union.
This week’s Tish will explore this story in more depth.

This Tish will be on zoom and in the SAJ Social Hall.
