Pathways to Prayer: “Judaism is a Living Thing”
November 6, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST
While we often think about our liturgy as timeless, it has actually evolved over the centuries. In this weekly class, we will look at the ways Jewish prayer has changed over time, focusing in particular on the Reconstructionist changes to the siddur. This will be a space to explore both the meaning of the liturgy and our own relationships to prayer. Are you moved to pray using traditional prayers in Hebrew? Are you tempted to change language about G-d to match your own theology? Do you think we should always keep the language the same, even if we don’t agree with the meaning behind the words? Whatever your relationship to prayer, we will explore these questions together, discussing themes including chosenness, feminism, the Temple, and G-d. We meet Fridays, October 16-December 18, 2020.
