Reading ancient Jewish texts with a queer framework (sometimes called “queering” the texts) is a process created by LGBTQ people that anyone can participate in and contribute to, which helps us illuminate how topics like power, gender, relationships, justice, and who is considered “normal” show up in our texts.

What is possible when we bring a queer perspective to our study of the Talmud, a 1500-year-old text full of Rabbinic stories, law, and conversations? Together, we will look at the ways in which a queer lens liberates the text and offers a powerful read on issues of power, relationships, normalcy and marginality. We will explore texts on the themes of choosing our families, whose bodies are considered normal, and institutional power and access. Texts will be provided in translation, and everyone is welcome! No matter how you identify, be prepared to bring your whole self to the discussion.

Session 1 (Thursday, February 4): Family and relationships

Session 2 (Thursday, February 11): Our bodies

Session 3 (Thursday, February 18): Power and institutions
