In this second of our series on homelessness in New York, we’ll explore the challenges and opportunities that arise when new shelters are opened in or moved to a new neighborhood. Shams DeBaron (a.k.a. Da Homeless Hero), will offer perspectives on how we can reimagine these often contentious relationships, drawing from his lived experience and personal journey through homelessness and the NYC shelter system. Shams is a current resident of the Lucerne and will speak directly to the particular challenges that arose within the context of an emergency move due to the Pandemic. Shams will be in conversation with Ruth Messinger, Social Justice Activist-in-Residence.
