Thirteen Ways of Looking at Joab, presented by Paul Davis (Multi-access Tish)

March 9 @ 9:00 am - 9:45 am EST

David and Joab deep in conversation

Thirteen Ways of Looking at Joab, presented by Paul Davis.

One of the earliest and greatest prose narratives in all of ancient literature is contained within the book of Samuel and the first two chapters of 1 Kings. The second most important character in that narrative is Yoav, the son of King David’s sister Tzruya. A brave soldier and shrewd general, a devoted brother and mostly loyal nephew willing to speak hard truths to his king, Yoav is also depicted as a man of blood who murdered multiple rivals in cold blood. After siding with the wrong son in a succession struggle, Yoav is eventually killed on Solomon’s orders inside the Mishkan. In this session we will unpack his complex story and his legacy, from the Mishnah and midrashim to a novel by the East German author Stefan Heym.
